“The acquisition of Helen Stummer’s photographs strengthens the Library’s outstanding collection of documentary photography, which includes Lewis Hine’s extensive photographic documentation for the National Child Labor Committee, the archives of the Farm Security Administration/Office of War Information, and Ansel Adams’ photographs of a Japanese relocation camp at Manzanar, California.”

Stummer attended Union County College, The International Center of Photography in Manhattan, graduated cum laude from Kean University as a studio art major in 1977, and received certification to teach art in 1978. In 1987 she completed a Master of Arts degree program in Visual Sociology from Vermont College. In addition to her private students, she also teaches workshops at the New Jersey Center for the Visual Arts in Summit.

A sociologist as well as an artist, Stummer has exhibited and lectured extensivley. Her photograph, "Sharell Showing Easter Dress to Grandmother" has been included in the Oxford History of Art, "American Photography," Oxford University Press publication, 2003. She has also received numerous grants and awards from such organizations as the Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation, The NJ Historical Commission, the Mid-Atlantic Foundation for the Arts, a 2003 and 1994-1995 grant recipient of the New Jersey State Council on the Arts.

She has created many photo-essays for the New York Times, City Limits, NYC, as well as Frame Work, California, LensWork Quarterly, California, Leica View, NYC, The International Journal of Visual Sociology, Germany, as well as many other publications.

Stummer's photographs are in the permanent collection of the Library of Congress, the Brooklyn Museum, the Newark Museum, the Newark Library, the Museum of the City of New York, the Jersey City Museum, the New Jersey Historical Society, the New York Historical Society, the Center For Photography at Woodstock, NY, the Child Welfare League of America, Washington, D.C. and in numerous private collections.
